Photovoltaic Technology

Solar energy is coming

The development of photovoltaic (PV) technology, which converts sunlight to electricity, is accelerating.  Driven by the world’s growing desire to generate energy from non-polluting, predictable, and sustainable resources, PV is emerging as a leading resource for future energy production.

Today's technologies trade off attributes

Over the past few decades, PV modules based on silicon (the earth’s second most abundant element) have developed into the most popular and proven PV technology, accounting for a majority of installations across the world. The manufacturing process for crystalline silicon PV, however, is inherently costly, using too much energy, capital, and expensive silicon.  Non-silicon based thin film modules (e.g., CdTe, CIGS) offer a less costly manufacturing process, but they suffer from much lower sunlight-to-electricity conversion efficiency, less readily available material inputs, and an unproven track record of reliability.

Solexel is committed to bringing you the total solar solution

Solexel is developing crystalline silicon based PV modules that offer the performance, quality, reliability, and sustainability of the best silicon-based PV at the industry-low cost of non-silicon thin film PV.  Our approach is based on a disruptive, IP-protected, high-efficiency technology which eliminates any dependency on the silicon feedstock, ingot, and wafer supply chain in addition to significantly reducing silicon consumption as compared to the current industry paradigm.  The active cell area is made through the use of plentiful, inexpensive silicon gas, as opposed to costly bulk silicon wafers.  The result is Solexel’s industry-low cost PV module which produces an industry-leading amount of electricity.  To read more about the attributes of Solexel's innovative modules, please click here.
